چکیده

Abstract Investing in the current reproduction requires diverting energy resources from other metabolic functions, which may compromise future and lifespan. To solve this trade-off, an individual consider its labile state to decide how much invest reproduction. We tested experimentally whether “state quality” of male rock lizards influences their reproductive strategies. improve nutritional status males before mating season, we captured supplemented experimental (N = 20) with dietary vitamin D3 (an essential nutrient for lizards) had a control group 20). Then, released all these females 31) large semi-natural outdoor enclosure where could interact mate freely during period. Activity levels did not vary between treatments, but started fewer intrasexual agonistic interactions made advances females. When season ended, incubated eggs laid by obtain offspring estimated paternity using DNA microsatellites. Supplemented sired than males. These results suggest that used low risk/less costly strategy protect assets (i.e., D reserves), still resulted “some” success, while likely increasing longevity expected total success.

Scent may signal fighting ability in male Iberian rock lizards.

Intrasexual competition favours the evolution of conspicuous fighting ability badges. However, in spite of the fact that chemoreception is important in sexual selection of many animals, such as lizards, the role of chemical signals in males' contests is relatively unknown. Here, we show that proportions of cholesterol in femoral gland secretions of male Iberian rock lizards were related to thei...

It is a potent satiety factor (Campfield et al., 1995; Halaas et al., 1995) but may serve other functions, such as the regulation of neuroendocrine systems and the gonads. This brief re...

Male-Male Clasping May Be Part of an Alternative Reproductive Tactic in Xenopus laevis

Male Xenopus laevis frogs have been observed to clasp other males in a sustained, amplectant position, the purpose of which is unknown. We examined three possible hypotheses for this counter-intuitive behavior: 1) clasping males fail to discriminate the sex of the frogs they clasp; 2) male-male clasping is an aggressive or dominant behavior; or 3) that males clasp other males to gain proximity ...
